Navarre is a quaint village located along the Tuscarawas River, providing natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike. Navarre is located in southeastern Bethlehem Township, about 12 miles from Canton and 30 miles from Akron. This central location makes Navarre accessible from neighboring towns, and makes commuting to nearby cities for work convenient for Navarre residents. Navarre is home to the manufacturing facility for Mid’s Homestyle Pasta Sauce, a major homemade pasta sauce company shipping to more than 32 states in the Midwest. Major corporations in Stark County include Timken CompanyDiebold Nixdorf, the Kenan Advantage Group, and LG Energy.

Although it does not have a main downtown area, Navarre is dotted with small local businesses, including boutiques, eateries, specialty shops, and more. However, the village is more residential, comprised of neighborhoods lined with historic homes. Navarre is filled with plenty of green space, including Navarre-Bethlehem Park and the Navarre Athletic Complex. The village is surrounded by beautiful farmland and picturesque country scenes.

Nearby Schools and Higher Education

Navarre is served by the Fairless Local School District, which includes Fairless Elementary School, Fairless Middle School, and Fairless High School, all of which are located in nearby Brewster. There are several private school options in the region, all accessible with a reasonable drive. While there are no institutions of higher learning located in Navarre, there are plenty of options within reach, including Malone University, Walsh University, and Stark State College, all of which are located in Canton.

In 1761, missionary Reverend Christian Frederick Post built the first residence, a log cabin, in what is now known as Navarre. This area was originally comprised of three former communities — Bethlehem, Rochester, and Navarre, each with their own central square. Bethlehem was the oldest of the three, and was laid out in 1806 by Jonathan Condy, followed by Rochester to the west in 1833 by Nathan McGrew. Finally, Navarre was established in 1834 by James Duncan in the center of the three. In 1872, the three communities merged to become the Village of Navarre after a financial depression caused fierce competition between the three villages.

During the 1830s, the Ohio & Erie Canal brought more commerce to the Navarre area, and the canal was in use until the flood of 1913. The canal still brings commerce to the village to this day.
